Sacro-Occipital Technique (SOT)
The SOT is a philosophy that considers any structural changes affecting the dura can also affect any area of the spine. The dura covers the entire central nervous system, including the brain and the spinal cord. Within SOT, there are techniques based on this idea of structural change.
Craniopathy is a method based on research that showed cranial bone movement and Dr. Bernard DeJarnette’s (SOT creator) conclusions that structural change of the cranial bones might affect movement of cerebrospinal fluid.
Another SOT method is called “blocking,” which involves having blocks placed beneath the pelvis. “Blocking” helps to normalize joint positions on both sides of the spine at the same time.
SOT can be used with other chiropractic techniques, and practitioners of the method tend to give patients nutritional counselling.
